World leaders call for restraint after Israel strikes 'Iranian targets' in Syria

The airstrikes were in response to a barrage of missiles fired at Israel late on Wednesday night, which Israel blames on the Quds force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

On Thursday morning, F-15 and F-16 fighter jets bombed over 50 Iranian targets throughout Syria as the Israel air force carried out an extensive campaign, dubbed "Operation House of Cards", to try and destroy Iran's military presence in the country, the army said Thursday.

Israel responded by launching air raids on Iranian targets across the Syria.

Syria's state media said Syrian air defenses intercepted "hostile Israeli missiles" early Thursday that were fired over southwestern Damascus.

In Iran's first official reaction to the attack, a Friday report in state-run IRNA quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi as saying the Israeli attack on Syria under "fabricated and baseless excuses" is a breach of the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.

Iran says Israel's repeated attacks are based on "fabricated" reasons.

After Trump announced the US withdrawal from the deal on Tuesday, Rouhani warned that Iran would resume uranium enrichment at an even higher rate if the accord collapses.

Israel has opposed the nuclear deal from the start, because we said that rather than blocking Iran's path to a bomb. He added, "I hope that we ended this chapter and that everyone understood".

"We are in the midst of a protracted battle and our policy is clear: We will not allow Iran to entrench itself militarily in Syria", Netanyahu said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held talks in Moscow on Wednesday with Russian President Vladimir Putin with Syria and President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the USA from the Iran nuclear deal at the heart of their discussions.

Sana reported that two missiles were shot down in the Kiswah area and that two civilians were killed in an explosion.

France and Germany led calls on Thursday for Israel and Iran to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation of hostilities, when President Emmanuel Macron and Chancellor Angela Merkel met in Aachen.

Tensions between Israel and Iran are high over Iran's efforts to expand its military presence in Syria, where it is a key ally of President Bashar Assad.

Israel, which nearly never confirms or denies airstrikes in Syria, did not comment on Tuesday's attack. It says they are there as military advisers to Syria. "They are determined to do it and we are determined to prevent it".
