Almost 600 Arrested in DC Amid Protests of 'Zero Tolerance' Immigration Policy

Almost 600 activists, protesting Donald Trump's "zero-tolerance" policy against illegal immigrants, have been arrested after staging an occupy sit-in at the Hart Senate Office building in the nation's capital.

The crowd was joined by a number of US Senators who oppose Trump's immigration policies, as well as other prominent people, among them as the actress Susan Sarandon.

"We are in ALUMINUM blankets to symbolize the shoddy conditions children and mothers are being held in", she tweeted out. It is unclear what, exactly, precipitated the arrests.

Jayapal later spoke out on her arrest, and called her detainment "courageous".

The number of rallies, protests and marches planned for Saturday to protest the Trump administration's immigration policies has expanded to more than 700 nationwide, organizers said.

The Washington, D.C., protest, which will take place in Lafayette Square near the White House, is slated to feature several speakers, including Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal said on Twitter she was arrested at the protest.

She was the first member of Congress to visit a federal prison where parents were separated from their children.

Eva Malecki, a spokeswoman for the United States Capitol Police, said 575 individuals were charged with unlawfully demonstrating in the atrium of the building.

Immigration activists rally as part of a march calling for "an end to family detention" and in opposition to the immigration policies of the Trump administration, in Washington, U.S., June 28, 2018.

It began at Freedom Plaza, then the group marched to the Department of Justice, where police had surrounded the building in preparation for the protest. "This is about right and wrong". The action lasted more than two hours. The idea that this president would pass a zero-tolerance, zero humanity policy and separate children from their parents, put these kids in cages, I think it's got everybody across the country outraged. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to stop separations, but the reunification process has proved to be complicated.
