Canada to legalise recreational cannabis

According to a column in Globe and Mail written by Andre Picard, there were more than 55,000 cannabis related charges against Canadians just in 2016 in which 76 percent were for possession of marijuana.

As for whether the government would pardon Canadians with prior marijuana convictions, Trudeau said it would be "illogical" to consider it before the law comes into effect.

It also allows consumers to prepare weed edibles for personal use and grow up to a maximum of four plants in their homes.

Cannabis has been legal in a number of areas in Canada already, mostly for medicinal purposes, but this will grant full permission for the recreational use of the drug throughout the country. The government emphasizes that the legalization will come with strict regulation that will prevent adolescent use and crack down on the illegal drug market.

Canada has passed a landmark law that legalises the recreational use of marijuana nationwide.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday marijuana will be legal nationwide on October 17. Trudeau is a member of the ruling Liberal Party.

The Prime Minister took Twitter soon after Senate passed the bill saying, "It's been too easy for our kids to get marijuana - and for criminals to reap the profits. Today, we change that".

The bill controls and regulates how the drug can be grown, distributed, and sold.

Its "historic" approval officially ends the country's nearly century-long prohibition on the substance.

The national minimum purchase age will be 18, but provinces and territories will be able to further regulate the purchase and sale of cannabis and some have indicated they will set the minimum purchase age at 19.

What did the bill's adversaries say?

"When you normalise the use of marijuana and you're a young person and you had certain reservations because of the simple fact that it was illegal, there's, I believe, a propensity to have somebody be more inclined to use it", Conservative senator Leo Housakos said. While we have a few steps left before legalization, including an implementation phase, this is, nonetheless, a transformative piece of legislation.

"We're very appreciative of the effort everybody's making, but I think Canadians expect us to do this in a responsible way and that's what we're aiming to do", Blair said.

Cannabis activists cheered the move on Wednesday morning.

What about the public health issue?

"This historic legislation will end prohibition and replace it with a sensible, responsible and equitable cannabis policy", she tweeted.
