Celtics Have Reportedly Made Another Trade Offer For Kawhi Leonard

Leonard has reportedly expressed his interest to join the Los Angeles Lakers, be it by trade this offseason or via free agency a year from now.

Los Angeles Lakers guard Lonzo Ball (2) defends Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James (23) in the first quarter at Quicken Loans Arena.

ESPN reported late Wednesday that the Lakers and Spurs had re-opened trade talks, including a key detail.

The Spurs are wary about sending Leonard to a potential rival superteam, preferring instead to keep him or trade him to the Eastern Conference, according to USA Today.

This has seen various reports with the Los Angeles Lakers being one of the primary teams leading the charge towards working out a deal to pry Leonard away from San Antonio.

"He'll be a free agent next year and he may hold the key to making it easier for LeBron to commit in free agency to the Lakers". The Lakers presumably believe that securing Leonard will entice LeBron James and/or Paul George to come on board as well. That potential move could compel the Lakers to get more aggressive in bidding for Leonard, all the better to land both him and James.

Any trade for Leonard would likely require a huge haul.

While it's fair to note the breakdown in communication between Leonard and the Spurs, an organization that typically avoids these sort of awkward situations, it's not rational to automatically label Leonard bad for team culture.

Irving would be an exciting piece to add to this Spurs roster but, like Leonard, Irving has his fair share of injury concerns that San Antonio should be cautious about. ESPN reports that San Antonio is "most intrigued" with Boston's assets.

James' decision to opt out of his contract seems to take the Houston Rockets off the table, as they would have major hurdles in signing him as a free agent while keeping their core together.

Following the conclusion of the NBA Draft last week, Cleveland general manager Koby Altman said the Cavs have had "good dialogue" with James' management team.

The Lakers would love to bring Leonard in this summer, and are feeling some pressure to do so before July 1, according to ESPN.
