ESA Issues Statement On WHO "Gaming Disorder" Diagnosis

ESA Issues Statement On WHO

Those behaviours, according to the World Health Organization, can significantly impair people's personal, family, social, educational, occupational and other important areas of functioning. WHO member Dr. Vladimir Poznyak tells CNN, "Millions of gamers around the world, even when it comes to the intense gaming, would never qualify as people suffering from gaming disorder".

Listed under "disorders due to addictive behaviors", "Gaming Disorder" is defined as "a pattern of gaming behavior ('digital-gaming" or "video-gaming') characterized by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences".

Now, the World Health Organization wants to include 'gaming disorder' in the new edition of the ICD.

Gaming Disorder is now a recognized condition, appearing in the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases.

Health concerns associated with gaming behaviour are not limited to gaming disorder, but also include other aspects of health (e.g. insufficient physical activity, unhealthy diet, problems with eyesight or hearing, musculoskeletal problems, sleep deprivation, aggressive behavior and depression) and psychosocial functioning. The evidence for its inclusion remains highly contested and inconclusive.

WHO will be notifying governments that they'll be expected to add gaming disorder to their public health systems. The new ICD-11 also reflects progress in medicine and advances in scientific understanding.

Some 2.5 billion people - one-in-three worldwide - play some form of free-to-play screen game, especially on cell phones, but the disorder only affects a "small minority", said Saxena.

UKIE already has their own FAQ up about the issue, which explains the controversy and the genuine disagreement in academic circles as to whether gaming addiction counts as a separate disorder.

"We come across parents who are distraught, not only because they're seeing their child drop out of school, but because they're seeing an entire family structure fall apart", said Dr. Henrietta Bowden-Jones, a spokeswoman for behavioral addictions at Britain's Royal College of Psychiatrists. In 2013 "Internet Gaming Disorder" was included in the classification of mental and behavioural disorders of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-5) as a condition for further study.
