Ex-Trump staffer Manafort hit with obstruction of justice in Russian Federation probe

Ex-Trump staffer Manafort hit with obstruction of justice in Russian Federation probe

The indictment states that Manafort and his associate Konstantin Kilimnik "knowingly and intentionally attempted to corruptly persuade" two unnamed witnesses "with intent to influence, delay, and prevent the testimony".

The charges do not relate to Manafort's work on the Trump campaign or involve allegations of Russian election interference, a fact that the president has routinely noted as he tried to distance himself from his former top campaign adviser.

By naming Kilimnik, the indictment could alter the way the prosecution of Manafort and the probe by Mueller into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign is perceived, said former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti. In one note, Manafort asked Kilimnik to offer Deripaska "private briefings" about the campaign. "When people first thought of the Mueller investigation, this is what people thought would result from it". Dems want insider trading probe over job tweet Dem senator won't return "blue slip" for two Trump court picks The Constitution, like its Framers, roundly rejects an imperial presidency MORE (R-Iowa) on Thursday, DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz said that he planned to release a report about the FBI's probe into former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's emails during the 2016 election on June 14.

Kilimnik could not be immediately reached for comment.

Friday's indictment was the first time Kilimnik has been named, having only been referred to as "Person A" so far.

On Friday, Trump also dismissed any talk of pardoning Manafort or his longtime personal attorney, Michael Cohen, who is under investigation by federal prosecutors in NY.

Kilimnik, described as a former Russian intelligence officer, worked with Manafort on the Yanukovych job. "It suggests it may be a chess move - the consequences of which are yet unknown to everybody except Bob Mueller". "Maybe the value of this indictment is what the American public thinks it is".

Investigators claimed that the "repeated" contacts occurred while Manafort was under house arrest, as a condition of his release pending the trials in Washington and Virginia. Citing the allegations, prosecutors have asked Jackson to consider jailing Manafort.

Manafort's lawyers responded to the new allegations in a sharply worded filing late Friday, accusing Mueller of contriving "dubious allegations" of witness tampering and, in so doing, poisoning the jury pool ahead of his trials.

"The special counsel creates an argument based on the thinnest of evidence", wrote the defense team led by Washington attorney Kevin Downing.

For Manafort, though, the charges come at a perilous time, just hours before his attorneys filed a legal brief arguing that he should be allowed to be freed from home confinement on bond pending his trial, scheduled for next month in Alexandria, Virginia. The judge demanded to see the memo because the charges brought against Manafort are well outside the scope of the Russian Federation probe. Mueller has said Kilimnik has links to Russian spy agencies, an allegation Kilimnik denies. This was Oleg Deripaska, who is considered to be close to President Vladimir Putin.

Manafort's resignation from the campaign was announced on August 19, 2016, after The Times reported that he'd received $12.7 million in undisclosed cash payments from Yanukovych's pro-Russian party between 2007 and 2012.

"You don't really care about Mr. Manafort", District Judge T.S. Ellis III told the prosecutors. "What we do know is that things we think are new to us, Mueller knew past year". "This is strong evidence of consciousness of guilt", said Zeidenberg, who prosecuted I. Lewis Scooter Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff.

"It's a statement of what he's able to prove right now", he said". They had been working together for years.
