First lady to attend Trump’s hurricane briefing Wednesday

Although she didn't appear in public until Monday-and even then at an event that was not teeming with press-the first lady did tweet about the rumors surrounding her absence, dismissing them and reassuring people that she would be back soon.

The families in attendance were excited to hear from the president and eager to see Melania. She had emergency surgery, what was described as embolization procedure involving her kidney, on May 14 at Walter Reed Medical Center, the White House said at the time.

US First Lady Melania Trump will not accompany the president to the Group of Seven summit in Canada, nor to planned North Korea nuclear talks in Singapore, her spokeswoman said Sunday.

It is a noticeable shift from weeks prior to her kidney surgery, when she engaged in several high-profile events.

It would be Mrs. Trump's first appearance outside the White House since May 10.

It's been nearly a month since Melania Trump has been seen in public and weeks since she reportedly underwent surgery for what was described as a "benign kidney condition". "I see the media is working overtime speculating where I am & what I'm doing", she wrote on May 30.

Comedian Sarah Silverman retweeted the first lady's post, adding: "Who is this? where's Melania?". She finally made a brief public appearance on Monday night, but Twitter is still, well, sort of skeptical.

As President Trump left the White House on May 25, he said his wife was "doing great", in response to a question shouted by a reporter.

Meanwhile, the rumour mill churns online.

Conspiracy theories behind the Melania mystery have included that she is recovering from plastic surgery in private, that she's fled to NY with Barron and that she's holed up with special counsel Robert Mueller, co-operating with his Russian Federation probe.

This did little to quell the conspiracy theories; indeed it only fueled the idea that the first lady had died or disappeared and someone else was writing her tweets for her.

But breaking cover behind closed doors hasn't stopped rampant speculation about Mrs Trump's health and situation.

Melania Trump criticized the media last week for speculating on her whereabouts. Everyone I know can't stop talking about where the first lady is. She also skipped the last two stops on his Asian trip in November, going with him to Japan, South Korea and China but staying behind in Beijing when her husband went on to Vietnam and the Philippines. She was released from the hospital with no complications on 19 May.
