Guatemala volcano: Baby rescue miracle as death toll rises

Guatemala volcano: Baby rescue miracle as death toll rises

Guatemalan authorities warned that the Fuego volcano was showing signs of greater activity on Tuesday night as the death toll from a devastating eruption at the weekend climbed to 75 and almost 200 people remained missing.

Only 23 of the bodies recovered so far have been identified.

"We now have an accounting with names and towns where people have gone missing and we have a figure, which is 192 people who we have unaccounted for", Disaster Relief Agency chief Sergio Cabanas was quoted as saying by AFP news agency.

On Tuesday, strong explosions billowed ash up more than 16,000 feet (5,000 meters) above sea level and the dust was blowing east and northeast.

Thousands of people have been evacuated in Guatemala since Sunday, when Fuego's largest eruption in four decades shot hot gas and smoke 6.2 miles into the sky, according to CONRED, the country's natural disaster agency. Rescuers were evacuated from those areas with the new flows Tuesday afternoon.

The death toll stands at 70, but is expected to rise.

As dawn broke, the volcano continued to rattle with what Guatemala's Volcanology Institute said were eight to 10 moderate eruptions per hour - vastly less intense than Sunday's big blasts.

Figures for the dead were tweeted by Guatemala's National Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The new evacuation order set off a panic even in areas that were not under it. Dozens of people could be seen walking down roadsides carrying children or a few belongings beside paralysed traffic in parts of Escuintla township south of the volcano. It has deposited quite a bit of loose volcanic material and it is also in a rain-heavy area, so when heavy rains hit the volcano that is going to be washing the deposits away into these mudflows which carry a lot of debris and rock.

Families of victims of the devastating volcanic eruption in Guatemala have been returning to the communities around the Fuego volcano to look for the...

Francis sent a telegram of condolence Tuesday, saying he was "profoundly sorry" to learn of the high toll.

Guatemala's Volcano of Fire is continuing to burst out rocks and ash, almost two days after a major eruption that killed at least 69 people.

That eruption caught residents of remote mountain hamlets off guard, with little or no time to flee to safety.
