Hurricane season officially begins in Atlantic

The Atlantic hurricane season is officially underway and understandably many are concerned about a repeat of last year's hyperactive and devastating season, especially since we have already had our first named storm of the year (Alberto) make landfall before the official start of the season.

The busy 2017 season saw 17 named storms, of which 10 became hurricanes, with six reaching the major storm status. The report sorts homes into five different risk categories: Low (homes affected only by a Category 5 storm), Moderate (homes affected by Category 4 and 5 storms), High (homes affected by Category 3, 4, and 5 storms), Very High (homes affected by Category 2, 3, 4, and 5 storms) and Extreme (homes affected by Category 1-5 storms).

Thomas notes previous year was one of the more active seasons on record, with historic rainfall from storms like Harvey and Maria damaging wide areas.

Hurricane season begins Friday and runs through November 30. El Niño tends to increase upper-level westerly winds across the Caribbean into the tropical Atlantic, tearing apart hurricanes as they try to form. The cone is swept out ahead of the storm location in a set of circles in 12-hour increments.

NOAA says the eastern Atlantic Ocean, from the African coast to several hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles, is cooler than normal.

As with any hurricane season, it only takes one landfall or close call for South Jersey residents to remember it as active.

"Hurricane Harvey demonstrated past year just how unsafe that can be".

A new report from real-estate data provider CoreLogic has shown that almost 7 million homes are at risk of storm surges in the USA this coming hurricane season.

Gov. Rick Scott wanted three week-long tax holidays for storm supplies but legislators opted for only one.

"The ability of NOAA scientists to both predict the path of storms and warn Americans who may find themselves in harm's way is unprecedented", said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross.

Ninty-five percent of all major hurricanes occur after Aug.1; Irma hit Florida Sept.10 a year ago. "They should prepare the same every season, regardless of how much activity is predicted".

The Center has seen improvements in the HWRF model, with a 15 to 20 percent improvement in hurricane intensity forecast accuracy each year since 2011.

Following months of legal disputes between the state and industry groups that pushed back on the requirements, the Florida Legislature passed rules mandating that those facilities verify they have installed a working generator or alternate backup power source by June 1, the start of hurricane season.
