Instagram Gets Into Long-Form Video With IGTV

To view and upload the longer videos, the company announced a new app called IGTV.

In an event in San Francisco, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said that IGTV will allow popular content creators to produce stunning 4K vertical videos that is a leap from their minute-long limit.

The photo-sharing social network said that it doesn't plan on producing its own content but instead will rely on its "creators" - plus celebrities like Selena Gomez, Kim Kardashian West and Kevin Hart - to make the app a draw. You don't have to search to start watching content from people you already follow on Instagram and others you might like based on your interests. Videos will begin playing as soon as the user opens the app and will fill be full-screen vertically - contrasting with YouTube, which requires users to turn their phones horizontally for full-screen capabilities. However, the discover feature is available when you swipe up.

As for who can create content for IGTV, Instagram notes that "anyone can be a creator on IGTV and upload videos in the app or on the web". All this will likely be revealed as the service rolls out "over the next few weeks" on Android and iOS.

Systrom further explains, "Also like TV, IGTV has channels". This will allow for more immersion, Instagram hopes, and longer sessions than the traditional app has allowed. Creators will have their own dedicated channels, too.

Instagram hasn't talked about the possibility of turning off video autoplay when launching the service, but it's likely that it will be a requested feature.

Instagram (IG), a Facebook subsidiary, is apparently chasing after another business this time, as it recently released a new feature to the IG app. One big disappointment from a design standpoint though, is that the app does not support full-screen iPhone X video. What are your thoughts on the new video-sharing app, IGTV? Also, unlike on Instagram, videos aren't limited to one minute. Instagram says it's not immediately paying for any content on the app, nor will it start with any advertising. In any case, Instagram wants to allow anyone to get famous on Instagram TV, "not just the people who already have large audiences".
