Jogger accidentally crosses into the USA border from British Columbia

A young French woman who was visiting her mother in western Canada spent two weeks in a USA detention center after inadvertently crossing the border while jogging along the beach, a report said Friday.

She hadn't seen any signs marking the border, she said.

They detained her, keeping her in custody for two weeks.

At the time, Roman said she did not have any government-issued identification or travel permits with her.

"An officer stopped me and started telling me I had crossed the border illegally", she said.

United States Customs and Border Protection caused an worldwide incident after detaining a French citizen jogging on the beach in British Columbia, Canada.

Roman is certainly not the first outdoors enthusiast to have made the mistake along the U.S.

Without realising, she mistakenly continued jogging into the U.S. state of Washington and after stopping to take a picture.

The US border agents stopped Roman and said they caught her crossing into the US on security video. 'They asked me to remove all my personal belongings with my jewelry, they searched me everywhere. Ferne brought her daughter's passport and Canadian student visa documents.

"Then I understood it was getting very serious, and I started to cry a bit", she added.

The process took two weeks and only then was Roman taken back to Canada.

When Roman's mother Christiane Fern learned of her daughter's incarceration, she collaborated with Immigration Canada to co-ordinate the release of her daughter.

According to the Province, the Canadian-U.S. border "isn't marked in the traditional way".

The unfortunate part is an incident like this can lead to some lasting trauma, but a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson said authorities handled the situation appropriately. -Canadian border, according to the story, but the officers said security cameras had caught her crossing the border and entering Blaine illegally.

Immigration officials on both sides of the almost 9,000km border refused to comment on Roman's case, pointing to concerns over privacy. The spokesperson is quoted as saying, "This applies regardless of whether or not the individual claims to have inadvertently crossed the border".

In a statement, US Customs and Border Protection noted that anyone who enters the US outside an official port of entry is considered to have crossed the border illegally.

As of now, it is unclear whether Roman will ever be allowed back into the United States.
