Lawyers Reveal Trump 'Dictated' Misleading Statement on Son's Russian Meeting

Lawyers Reveal Trump 'Dictated' Misleading Statement on Son's Russian Meeting

The government price tag of US Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 US presidential elections stood at about $16.7 million in its first 10 and a half months, according to the AP.

"If Mueller tries to subpoena us, we're going to court", Giuliani said in an interview with ABC News.

The Russia investigation, spearheaded by the special counsel Robert Mueller, has two broad threads as it relates to Trump: whether members of the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow to help tilt the 2016 USA election in his favor, and whether Trump later sought to obstruct justice when he learned of the investigation's existence after taking office.

They also argue that Trump can not be accused of obstructing justice because he has the constitutional power to end the investigation led by the Justice Department.

The letter, which was written by Trump lawyers John M. Dowd and Jay A. Sekulow, is reportedly part of a legal campaign to prevent Trump from having to answer Mueller's questions, or from being compelled to testify, out of fear that Trump would expose himself to another crime - lying to federal investigators - which he could be impeached for.

In a letter to Mueller, Trump's lawyers argued he could not obstruct justice.

In a Saturday tweet, Trump asked whether the special counsel or Justice Department had leaked the letter to the media. "So bad for our Country".

Although White House officials have called for the probe to wrap up soon, Trump's new budget projects that the special counsel will continue to be in business in fiscal-year 2019.

The inclusion of pardoning and ending the probe could serve as both a defense that if Trump was indeed obstructing the investigation, he would have ended it long ago.

Similar to Trump, Giuliani also accused the special counsel of leaking the memo, telling ABC News that Mueller should have released a statement condemning the Times' report and should investigate his team in response to its publication.

In another eye-opening section of the letter, Trump's lawyers contend that the president's interview with NBC's Lester Holt two days after he fired Comey has been "widely misreported and mischaracterized".

The lawyers also seem to hold out the possibility of a pardon for former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

It also asserts that, under the power of the Constitution, Trump could "if he wished, terminate the inquiry".

The president on Saturday afternoon addressed the letter directly on Twitter. Trump said that "when I made a decision to just do it, I said to myself - I said, you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story". The department said the components would have incurred those expenses even if the special counsel didn't exist - an indication of how embedded investigative activities are within the department.

Three of those conversations occurred in person and one was over the phone, the report said.
