Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne admits she will lose provincial election

She would not endorse either party and would not say whether she will stay on as leader after June 7.

She stopped short of stepping down as party leader of the Liberal Party of Ontario and indicated that there was no one single event or issue that pushed her to the decision to publicly concede before voters even went to the polls.

"When you're being bullied, you have to stand up to the bully", she said. Because, as I've said, it's not about me.

So, for the next few days I will campaign hard to elect as many Liberals as possible. "And so we need Liberals at Queen's Park to stop a majority for either of the other governments".

Her message was met with accusations of fear mongering and "straight crass politics" which she wholly rejects. "People worry that the NDP will raise taxes on small businesses, that they will push job creation lower", the premier said in her remarks. "They're hoping they can salvage (the party).it's about saying to people: don't abandon us".

"It's hard because I know there are Liberals who believe in us", she said tearfully.

The Liberals used their entire $1 million pre-writ ad spend on a negative ad campaign attacking Ford.

Her party has been trailing behind the Progressive Conservatives and the New Democrats in the polls for weeks.

Provincial NDP leader Andrea Horwath gives the thumbs up to supporters at an NDP rally in Toronto, Sunday, June 3, 2018.

Provincial support could take the form of worker training or education, but the Liberal party is still figuring out how to best support the industry if the tariffs persist, Ms. Wynne said.

"Andrea Horwath would empty the public purse and that's the problem with being so rigid with your ideology that you get stuck", Wynne said on Monday.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne at a townhall meeting in Windsor, February 15, 2018.

Okay I've got to stop there.

"It is absolutely wrong".

"Our system encourages and also thrives under minority governments at times, and this is one of those times", said Bortolin.

Liberal Michael Coteau, who served as minister of children and youth services until the election began, said news of Wynne's decision was shared in a conference call less than half an hour before she publicly announced it. Coteau, who wasn't on the call, said he learned of the move on social media.

"We all, of course, wanted to win this election".

Having already defied the pollsters and pundits in the 2014 campaign, Wynne said it turns out this time was different.

Tory leader Doug Ford had little to say about the announcement, noting only that the election is about change and people are fed up. "We're going to make sure that we're all environmentally friendly". It's about the people of this province.

Wynne said she believed she could win on the policies the Liberals put forward because they were "so much what people had said to us that they needed".
