Melania Trump Visits Texas Border to Meet With Immigrant Kids

First Lady Melania Trump made a surprise visit to a Texas detention center Thursday.

As if Melania Trump and her husband were not already in the media spotlight when it comes to the President's harsh policy to separate children from their parents on our southern border, the First Lady may have just made things quite a bit worse for herself. She may also visit a second facility later in the day where children housed in cages were seen by The Associated Press last week.

Instead, the first lady spent an hour-plus at the shelter, talking directly to children who spoke to her either in English or in Spanish, through a translator.

"It's a jacket. There was no hidden message", said Melania Trump's publicist, insisting reporters instead focus on the First Lady's detention center visit. It was a move reminiscent of her decision past year to wear stilettos to a hurricane relief zone, which was also the subject of much deliberation about her fashion decisions.

A separate case by the American Civil Liberties Union challenging family separations - but not the "zero tolerance" policy - argues that families have the right to remain unified. He reversed course Wednesday by signing the order ending separations and keeping families together when they are in custody, at least for the next few weeks.

Mrs Trump's husband credited her and his daughter Ivanka for persuading him to end the separation of children from parents who had entered the U.S. illegally.

She visited a one-storey red brick building, which houses 55 children between the ages of 12 and 17. She added that she wanted to offer "help to these children to reunite with their families as quickly as possible". She didn't appear to be wearing the jacket when she arrived in Texas.

Later, she toured a section of the facility where the children have bedrooms and was told they maintain their own rooms.

The first lady's appearance, which was kept secret until she touched down, came as the administration, facing questions over the well-being and whereabouts of thousands of children, sought to put a more humane lens on its policies.

"She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws but also a country that governs with heart".

"Melania Trump is the wife of billionaire".

He said: "Ivanka feels very strongly, my wife feels very strongly about it, I feel very strongly about it".

The first lady intends to inform the President on what she sees.

This visit was an attempt to lend support to those caring for the immigrant children, although Trump did not make a public statement about the plight of separated families until this past Sunday.
