Microsoft acquires Flipgrid, a video discussion platform for education

Flipgrid has more than 20M teachers and students in 180 countries using the platform.

For those who previously paid for use of Flipgrid, Microsoft says that it will be giving a prorated refund.

Microsoft Corp.is hoping to gain a new software edge over rivals such as Google LLC in the highly competitive education market. In both products all a user has to do is copy their FlipGrid right into OneNote or Microsoft Teams and it can be used like any other piece of content. FlipGrid is also teaming up with Microsoft for four new classes focused completely on student voice.

Founded in 2014 as Vidku, Flipgrid has developed an app that enables teachers and students to create online communities around their classroom and social groups.

"We're thrilled to see the impact Flipgrid has had in social learning thus far and look forward to helping them continue to thrive as part of the Microsoft family", said Eran Megiddo, corporate vice president for Microsoft, in a prepared statement.

In a statement, Microsoft said it would make Flipgrid free for educators and would offer refunds to everyone who has purchased a subscription from Flipgrid in the previous year.

Flipgrid started when Charles Miller, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota and former co-director of its Learning Technologies Media Lab, was traveling overseas for a research project and wanted to continue class discussions with the 12 graduate students in a course he was teaching. Flipgrid's post also mentions plans for continued support on iOS. In fact, Flipgrid already works with Microsoft Teams. The potential benefits include increased social and emotional skills, like self-confidence and public speaking.

As per the blog released, the acquisition of Flipgrid by Microsoft is one conspicuous strategy of winning share in the field of Education.

Joey Taralson, VP of user engagement at the startup, told Business Insider that "the potential to make Flipgrid free was actually a large factor in the decision to sell" and to get to the next level it would require "the backing of someone like Microsoft".
