Mitch McConnell cancels bulk of Senate's August recess

The legislation was crafted after Trump announced tariffs on USA allies Mexico, Canada and the European Union.

Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell is defending his decision to cancel his chamber's August recess.

Here's what to expect in the coming weeks ahead. Republicans control the Senate 51-49.

"This is dumb", Nebraska's GOP Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.). Lamar Alexander of Tennessee said in a statement. The Senate has accelerated its work here lately, with seven new Trump-appointed circuit court judges confirmed just last month, for a total of 21 so far. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., the chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee.

Asked Tuesday if he was trying to leverage an agreement on nominees with Democrats in exchange for freeing recess time back up for them, McConnell dismissed the possibility of altering his plans.

The British leader has said that European nations should be permanently exempted from the tariffs. It's really an executive branch activity.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders regularly brings up the confirmations backlog prior to daily briefings. "Without an alternative solution, tariffs are the only measures appropriate to safeguard the country". "It marked the first time since 2014 that a bill was defeated on the floor of the Senate". The House passed its version of the $717 billion defense bill last month.

Corker admitted that even with some bipartisan support, not every senator in his party would welcome this type of a bill. They will no longer need to fear being ambushed by those concerned about a lack of affordable health care coverage or underfunded safety net programs like Medicare and Social Security. Another $69 billion would be for US war efforts overseas. Topping the agenda is passage of the annual defense bill, which includes pay raises for the troops.

Conservative lawmakers and groups have been pressing McConnell to keep lawmakers in session to address almost 150 federal judicial vacancies - a number Democrats attribute to GOP delaying tactics during President Barack Obama's last years in office.

But McConnell said he would potentially allow the NDAA to be used to push it through.

He also noted that he was "extremely proud" that the bill incorporates over 300 amendments submitted from members on both sides of the aisle.

Republicans will try to make the case to the administration that tariffs could dampen the economic gains from the GOP tax cuts and sour the mood among voters as lawmakers are campaigning to protect the Republican majority in Congress.

Corker also expressed concern that because Trump is so heavily invested in the tariffs, rebuking him in such a way could be hard for those in a political bind.

"May I speak on the amendment?" As we've often argued, it's well past time for Congress to get back to regular order and pass actual agency appropriations bills on time - no more shutdown showdowns, no more last-minute continuing resolutions, no more omnibuses, cromnibuses, minibuses, or megabuses, please! "We think they're a big mistake".

But the cancellation also has another benefit that McConnell did not mention.

"I'm not going to call it up free-standing", McConnell said. That effort ultimately failed and lawmakers were able to go home in early August.

As for Trump's pick to lead the Veterans Affairs department, GOP leaders appeared more optimistic than they did for previous nominee Ronny Jackson.

All eyes are now on Robert Wilkie, who's been acting secretary ever since former VA Secretary David Shulkin was sacked in March. It's a strategy some Republicans still viewed this week as the best option.

Meanwhile, McConnell said he wants to pass as many annual spending bills as possible before the September 30 end of the federal fiscal year. Durbin, Illinois Democrat, said to CNN in reaction to the news August recess was scrapped.

They face the dilemma of either remaining in Washington and forfeiting time they would otherwise use to campaign in their home districts, or remaining in their home states and risking criticism that they're shunning their current duties, the paper reports.

The House of Representatives is still scheduled to take August off.

Congress is heading into another shutdown showdown, and some are anxious that President Trump could use the financial deadline to put his foot down on funding for his border wall. Government funding runs out on September 30th. "If the Senate isn't able to get that work done then they can stay in August and get it done, that's fantastic". Also waiting for approval of nearly 300 nominations, worst in history.
