Mulroney says he's 'never seen anything' like Trump surrogates' attacks on Trudeau

Mulroney says he's 'never seen anything' like Trump surrogates' attacks on Trudeau

"Canada does not believe that ad hominem attacks are a particularly appropriate or useful way to conduct our relations with other countries", Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said.

Trudeau promised retaliatory measures against USA tariffs on Saturday evening after the summit, a move Navarro called "nothing short of an attack on our political system".

"All Mr. Trudeau was doing, in a rather gentle way, was articulating the position of his government, which would be the position of any Canadian government in these circumstances", he said, adding that the counter-tariffs make sense.

The scene was captured in a photo during the G7 summit, and the seemingly tense moment did not go unnoticed.

U.S. President Donald Trump says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's assertion that Canada "will not be pushed around" will end up costing Canadians "a lot of money".

"Very disappointing and childish and unprofessional behavior [from Trudeau]", Gorka said while on Fox & Friends on Monday.

Since Trump's election in 2016, Trudeau has tried to take a conciliatory approach to the populist Republican president and has been careful never to run him down in public.

Trump has framed the topic of trade agreements as an issue of national security, a stance backed by the advisers he has stocked in his White House, including the new National Security Advisor John Bolton.

More news: Trudeau criticism will cost Canada 'a lot of money'

And on Twitter, the hashtag #ThanksCanada was trending with Americans thanking their neighbours to the north for everything from Nanaimo bars to hockey to caring for airline passengers during 9/11.

Trump arrived in Singapore on Sunday in preparation for his meeting with Kim after cutting short his trip to Quebec for the G7 summit, where he met the leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the EU.

He said Trudeau's promise to follow through with tariffs on United States goods - a response to Trump's own tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico, and the European Union - would hurt the Canadian economy.

The Americans' criticism of Trudeau left a former Canadian prime minister, Stephen Harper, stumped. "The problem was that in conveying that message I used language that was inappropriate".

He cited "a $800 Billion Trade Deficit" for the US, a number he's touted several times. "Not fair to the PEOPLE of America!" he tweeted.

People close to the situation said they were disappointed the outreach had not been as productive as they hoped. And what did Trudeau do as soon as the plane took off from Canadian airspace? "Obviously, we don't want to be held hostage to these tariffs Donald Trump has arbitrarily put in place, but there are other things that we would like to see in terms of advancing the free trade agenda".

Merkel's comments come after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada would be imposing retaliatory tariffs on the United States.

"He really stabbed us in the back".
