No panic in Singapore as summit approaches

No panic in Singapore as summit approaches

With gaps remaining over what denuclearisation would entail, officials from both sides were trying to push the agenda forward ahead of Tuesday's summit.

"Substantive and detailed meetings in #Singapore today", Pompeo wrote on Twitter, along with photos of Sung Kim and North Korean officials at the negotiating table.

Hammering out a complete plan for North Korea's denuclearization would be "an impossible chore" at this summit, Michael O'Hanlon of the Brookings Institution told NPR.

It was reported that Kim planned to fly back to North Korea in the early afternoon on Thursday, leaving very little time for actual negotiations, although there is still considerable uncertainty about what a deal between the leaders would look like.

Dismantling a secret nuclear arsenal built up over decades would take several years and be extremely hard to check, they say.

"They are still debating over whether to put [the term] "CVID" in the final draft", the source said.

It also offered a list of Pyongyang's talking points, saying Kim and Trump will exchange "wide-ranging and profound views" on establishing a new relationship, the issue of building a "permanent and durable peace mechanism" and realizing the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Haas offers a useful warning, though, as people around the world settle in to watch the show in Singapore: "Virtually no North Korea analyst inside or outside of the USA government" expects Kim to actually give up his nukes.

He was joined in Singapore by Ambassador Sung Kim, the US envoy to the Philippines; and Ambassador Michael McKinley, a career diplomat Pompeo recently tapped to be his senior adviser.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said U.S. and North Korean officials would hold working-level talks on Monday.

"There is no military solution to the problem on the Korean Peninsula", he said.

KCNA noted that the summit meeting is the first in history between the two countries and will be held "under the great attention and expectation of the whole world". But any request for the U.S. to withdraw its 28,000 troops from South Korean bases would likely be rejected.

The US president had told reporters in Canada that he "felt confident" about Tuesday's talks with Kim.

Kim met the Singaporean prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, briefly on Sunday, smiling broadly as the two posed for photographs.

"We're meeting with the chairman on June 12 and I think it's probably going to be a very successful - ultimately a successful process", Trump said.

"Chairman Kim is anxious about whether he can trust that the U.S. will end the policy of hostility and guarantee the stability of his regime", the South Korean President told the media upon his secretive meeting with Kim in May. In a sign of lingering tensions, the North Koreans have been closely scrutinizing all American staffers who are slated to be in any U.S. South Korea's Hankook Ilbo reported that Singapore recommended the St. Regis, which hosted Chinese President Xi Jinping during his 2015 summit with Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou, because it can be easily secured. Trump turns 72 on Thursday.

The MFA also said Lee will meet President Trump separately on Monday.

Led by Sung Kim, a longtime State Department diplomat who now serves as the US ambassador to the Philippines, the USA team had held at least five sessions with the Pyongyang delegation over the past two weeks at the demilitarized zone in Korea. And he won't have that opportunity again. There was no official word that Kim had left the country Sunday and arrived in Singapore, hours before Trump.
