'Ocean's 8' Owns The Box Office With $41.5M Opening Weekend

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow have found mid-budget box office success with "Ocean's 8", the Sandra Bullock-fronted, all-female spinoff of "Ocean's Eleven" that has opened to $41.5 million from 4,145 screens.

Not being the greatest fan of the "Ocean's" series - too much self-congratulatory buddy-buddyism and sloppily plotted skulduggery - I wasn't foaming at the mouth to see "Ocean's 8", the female redo directed and co-written (with Olivia Milch) by Gary Ross.

"Ocean's 8" stars Cate Blanchett, Awkwafina, Sarah Paulson, Anne Hathaway, Sandra Bullock, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter and Rihanna attend the movie's world premiere in NY.

The film has an ensemble cast including Rihanna, Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson and Helena Bonham Carter. "These actors did a tremendous job telling a fun story going after a very specific demographic, females, an audience that is often underserved". "But this isn't about just women". Did you see one of the three new releases this weekend?

Ari Aster's directorial debut has been critically lauded since its debut in the Midnight section at Sundance Film Festival. The horror film, about a family haunted after its matriarch dies, stars Toni Collette and Gabriel Byrne. It cost $15 million with A-list stars making sacrifices to appear in it.

Explaining how she got to where she is today, the actress credited director Jan de Bont for giving her her breakout role in 1994's Speed, "when I was the last person the studio wanted". But some of the story was still the same.

Magnolia Pictures' Ruth Bader Ginsburg doc, "RBG", continues to perform well, adding $700,000 in its sixth weekend, for a North American cumulative of $9.1 million. Also opening in limited release this weekend was Focus' Won't You Be My Neighbor? It received a fresh score from Rotten Tomatoes (69 percent) and a solid but not spectacular B+ from Cinemascore. It has now grossed $176.1 million, well off its expected pace.

Meanwhile, "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" is already devouring prey at the global box office, which is a good way to get itself early headlines.

Initial reviews, which came out this week, were mixed for J.A. Bayona's sequel. However, while the 2016 Ghostbusters was ultimately considered a disappointment (tapping out with $129 million), Ocean's 8 will be considered a big win for Warner Brothers. Internationally the film brought in an additional $12.2 million in 16 markets, bringing its worldwide total to $53.7 million.

Third spot went to "Deadpool 2" from 20th Century Fox, at $13.7 million. A24's R-rated thriller didn't scare audiences away - it exceeded estimates to open in fourth place with $13 million from 2,964 locations.

"Life of the Party", $2.1 million. Ocean's Eight's reign may be a short one, with The Incredibles 2 arriving next weekend and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in the frame after that, but its debut is still impressive nonetheless.

"Solo: A Star Wars Story", $11.3 million.

"Toilet: Ek Prem Katha", $9 million.

"Avengers: Infinity War", $10.9 million.
