Rapper XXXTentacion reportedly shot in Florida

Rapper XXXTentacion was shot to death in Miami, the Broward County Sheriff's Department reported.

Several videos posted to social media showed his lifeless body in the driver seat of a vehicle on the side of the road. Authorities later confirmed the victim's identity to be XXXTentacion.

That's when two armed suspects approached him and shot him, in a possible robbery, police say. At least one of them opened fire before fleeing in a dark-colored SUV.

Tributes to the controversial rapper have been pouring in from fellow musicians in the wake of his death.

Earlier the local Broward Sheriff's Office confirmed that it is was "working an incident regarding a shooting" next to a motorcycle dealership.

The rapper was involved in serious legal trouble and episodes of violence, including getting into fights with fans, and had been accused of repeated instances of domestic assault.

However, the real recognition for XXXTentacion came previous year when his debut album 17 made it to the second spot on the US Billboard 200.

"The Florida native rapidly rose to fame in 2016 after his song "Look at Me" went viral on Soundcloud, with his latest album "?" debuting at number 1 on the Billboard chart.

Despite - or perhaps because of - his grim and sometimes suicidal lyrics, XXXTentacion catapulted to the top of U.S. charts just months ago. He had been awaiting trial on multiple felony charges and allegations of domestic abuse of his pregnant girlfriend.

"Rest in peace. I never told you how much you inspired me when you were here", West posted on Twitter along with a photo of the rapper.

Following the charges, Onfroy was removed from certain Spotify playlists as part of a new policy by the music streaming platform to address "artist conduct".
