Relay for Life a Night of Celebration

For the past 24 years, the Relay for Life of Lima has been raising money for the American Cancer Society to help people here locally with their own fight with cancer, plus help find a cure for the bad disease.

The goal of this years event was to raise $78,000.00 this year.

Relay For Life of Aroostook this year shifts to a daytime format while keeping firmly focused on its mission to celebrating cancer survivors, remembering those lost to cancer and fighting back against the disease. On Saturday, she marched in Relay for Life as part of the Carlton's Crew team in honour of her son, who recently passed away from the same brain cancer that claimed his idol.

This will be the first year the two municipalities have held a combined relay.

While White says hearing the words "You have cancer" is scary situation, she said her support is something helped her through the whole battle.

The funds raised from the events will support Canada's most promising cancer research, as well as the support services for local patients and their families.

"I'm not shy", she said.

Team members took turns walking around the stadium. Each Relay takes on its own life and because it is volunteer lead, each community makes it unique.

Bert Barresi comes from a family of nine, five of whom have had some form of cancer, some early in age and some within recent years.

"He conquered that, he kicked its but", she said.

"It has given us a more intimate location to create togetherness", said organizer Sophia Conerly.

"I'm proud of every single student involved", said Docherty. The intense treatment had taken such a toll on her body and mind, she thought about forgoing further treatment and resigning to the fact she wouldn't be around much longer.
