While the rains are welcome in a parched state struggling with drought, the pending storms come with risks of flooding and lightning-caused wildfire. By Friday night, it was 16,000 acres and continued to spread overnight.

Approximately 450 firefighters and other personnel are assigned to the fire.

The fire, being called the "416 Fire", was spotted north of Durango Friday morning and was being fueled by shifting winds, onto the San Juan National Forest. But firefighters were able to keep the fire out of Cimarron.

Kit Carson Telecom said it had set up a mobile cell on wheels system to provide service to the fire's incident command center in Eagle Nest.

The Ute Fire grew to 8,000 acres by Friday afternoon.

Cimarron village councilor Laura Gonzales, who has pulled back to back all nighters with staff to keep people informed, said in an update on the Facebook page Cimarron, NM Info Board on Saturday that fire managers were "confident in the protection" of Lambert Hills, Cimarron and Mountain Meadows.
