Trump Broke Out a Throwback Lie About Firing Comey

Trump Broke Out a Throwback Lie About Firing Comey

And in fact, when I chose to just do it, I said to myself, 'You know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation, is a made up story'.

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) stepped up to the plate today and defended President Trump's demonstrably-false claim that firing FBI director James Comey had nothing to do with the investigations into Russian Federation.

McCabe, who became acting Federal Bureau of Investigation director after Comey's dismissal, was sacked in March in a move he suggested at the time was "because of the role I played, the actions I took, and the events I witnessed in the aftermath of the firing of James Comey", Business Insider reported.

Trump told "NBC Nightly News" anchor Lester Holt on May 11, 2017 that he wanted the FBI's investigation to "be so strong and so good". "The Corrupt Mainstream Media loves to keep pushing that narrative, but they know it is not true!", the president posted on his Twitter account.

In the same television interview, Trump also undermined the White House's initial claim that the decision to sack Comey came from a recommendation from the Justice Department. But Thursday's tweet appears to respond to new reports that former Federal Bureau of Investigation acting director Andrew McCabe wrote a secret memo detailing the events, including conversations he had with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, that led to Comey's firing.

According to the newspaper, McCabe thought Rosenstein's comment suggested that he gave cover to Trump by not mentioning Russian Federation in the statement on Comey.

That was a departure from the White House's original rationale for the firing: that Comey was compromised because of incompetence in handling the 2016 probe into Hillary Clinton's private email server.

The Kremlin has denied meddling in the election and Trump has denied that there was any collusion between his campaign and Moscow officials. Later in the morning, Trump said he needed to "start focusing my energy" on other policy priorities and "not on the Rigged Russia Witch Hunt" that he argued should instead be examining his political opponents. And on Sunday, the president asked who would "give back the young and handsome lives (and others) that have been devastated and destroyed by the phony Russia Collusion Witch Hunt?"

Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani defended the president's attacks against Mueller and labeled the investigation "illegitimate" during an interview with CNN that was broadcast Sunday.
