Trump says he will ask lawmakers for more funding for border wall

Trump says he will ask lawmakers for more funding for border wall

Trump tweeted on Wednesday morning.

As showdown votes approached, Trump again called for an end to the judicial process that now awaits unauthorized immigrants entering the United States.

The measure would give some young immigrants a chance of citizenship, finance President Donald Trump's proposed border wall and bar the Homeland Security Department from taking children from immigrant families caught entering the US illegally.

The bill, consideration of which was postponed twice, received only 121 votes for and 301 votes against, according to Interfax-Ukraine.

The White House's involvement was scattered and disorganized, prompting many Republicans to abandon the cause.

The tally also seemed to empower GOP conservatives on the fraught issue. Last week a harder-right package was defeated but 193 Republicans voted for it, 72 more than Wednesday's total.

The vote caps a frustrating year for advocates on both sides of the immigration divide.

Despite a massive push from House GOP leadership, members of the Republican conference were unable to square away differences on a bill that would have provided funding for a border wall and a pathway to citizenship for recipients of the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as "Dreamers". U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw in San Diego ordered border authorities to reunite children with their families within 30 days of the Tuesday ruling, or 14 days if the child is younger than 5.

"The bill included a conservative proposal to end family separations at the border, an issue that has inflamed tensions".

Love was among a small group of moderate Republicans who attempted to force a vote on several immigration bills through a rarely used procedural manuever known as a discharge petition.

Hard-liners who opposed amnesty in any form cheered Wednesday's vote. Some supported the more hardline bill and only that bill while others negotiated the compromise bill.

"While today's vote is a setback, I will not take a step back".

A far-reaching Republican immigration bill is careening toward likely House rejection.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told a Senate hearing on Tuesday that most of the 2,000-plus children who had been separated from their parents could not be reunited with them until Congress passes new legislation.

"Once again, Republican leaders put a partisan immigration bill on the floor, and it failed overwhelmingly", House Democratic Whip Steny H Hoyer said. And rather than achieving middle ground, leaders' efforts have largely underscored how irreconcilably divided the GOP is on the topic.

It did not, however, include mandatory E-Verify, which would require companies to check the migration status of potential hires. A vote is scheduled for this evening. Democrats are set to vote solidly against it.

Although the administration has said the zero-tolerance policy remains in place, officials said on Monday that parents who crossed illegally with their children would not face prosecution for the time being, because the government was running short of space to house them. With Republicans well placed to build on their Senate majority in the November midterms, Democrats will have little choice but to shift their focus from House to Senate races.
