North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's motorcade suddenly left the St. Regis hotel in Singapore Sunday night, arriving at one of the city's most famous tourist spots, the Gardens by the Bay, minutes later.

The two leaders discussed relations between their countries, developments in North Korea and the region, including recent positive developments on the Korean peninsula, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement.

Kim was accompanied by Kim Yong Chol, the former spy chief and one of North Korea's chief negotiators, as well as Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, former Foreign Minister Ri Su Yong, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son Hui, Minister of the People's Armed Forces No Kwang Chol, Workers' Party of Korea Director Han Kwang Sang, and Party First Deputy Director Kim Yo Jong.

The two men spoke privately before a backdrop of red, white and blue flags, North Korea's single star interspersed with the stars and stripes of the American banner.

"Prime Minister Lee complimented the bold and admirable decision by Chairman Kim and President of the United States Donald Trump to come together for this Summit", it said.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, spent the morning preparing with his top advisers, aides said.

Trump has insisted that Pyongyang must give up its nuclear weapons ambition.

"The deep-rooted hostile relationship and the North Korean nuclear issue can not be resolved in one single action in a meeting between leaders", the president said after the cabinet meeting on Monday.

Kim also patted Trump, in an attempt to assert control. "And it's my honour and we will have a terrific relationship".

North Korea's central news agency on Monday proclaimed a "changed era", and promised talks on "the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula" as well as "the issue of realizing the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula".

"Trump is a gambler and he's gambling on being able to rein in North Korea like a parent does to naughty child", Leong said. The U.S. president turns 72 on June 14.
