U.S. is a 'piggybank everyone is robbing', says Trump at G7

U.S. is a 'piggybank everyone is robbing', says Trump at G7

Mr Trump earlier warned his counterparts against retaliation after the United States imposed tariffs on steel and aluminium from Europe, Mexico and Canada - saying they would be "making a mistake".

The G7, or "Group of Seven", is now made up of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, and Japan.

Trump also threatened: "I have instructed our U.S. Reps not to endorse the Communique as we look at Tariffs on automobiles flooding the U.S. Market!"

The U.S. president is lashing out on several fronts.

The president went into the meeting under intense pressure from foreign leaders after he slapped high tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, citing USA national security needs.

"The prime minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the president".

Even Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron - who have both previously shown a willingness to swallow their differences with Trump - have voiced their willingness to cut the United States adrift if they can not reach some kind of consensus at the summit.

He also denied the summit had been contentious, a remark that contradicted what one G7 official described as an "extraordinary" exchange on Friday in which Trump repeated a list of trade grievances, mainly concerning the European Union and Canada.

The prime minister did not provide much detail at the news conference about where the G7 were able to come together, and did not immediately release the communique.

During an evening stroll with his wife and another couple, Trudeau was asked a couple of times by a reporter for his reaction to Trump's tweets.

Previous G7 summits have seen large-scaled anti-globalization protests.

He said: "And so began a long litany of recriminations, somewhat bitter reports that the United States was treated unfairly, that the trading system was totally unfavourable to the United States, the American economy, American workers, the middle class".

"We strive to reduce tariff barriers, non-tariff barriers and subsidies", the statement said. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did not wait for the US president to kick off the meeting in La Malbaie, Quebec.

Trump quickly responded on Twitter that he was surprised by Trudeau's comments because he found the prime minister "so meek and mild" at the summit.

The President said Canada and Mexico were also close to a deal on a sunset clause on NAFTA, but a senior Canadian official said Ottawa is not interested in such a clause that would trigger reopening the trade pact in five years. "And that ends", Trump said. Hours later, the prime minister quickly dispensed with that idea.

Germany has suggested making accommodations over trade with the U.S. for fear of triggering a ratcheting up of tensions over cars that would embroil companies like BMW and Mercedes. "If you put an expiry date on any trade deal, that's not a trade deal".

Before Trump's late-day tirade issued after he left the country, the exclusive club produced a communique exposing other areas of discord.

While the Trump administration has characterized their rift as a family quarrel, his fellow leaders appear to be itching for a fight with a U.S. president - the G7's traditional patriarch - during the two-day summit in the Canadian countryside.
