US Kids Taught School Shooting Safety Tips In Heartbreaking Nursery Rhyme

A humbling image has emerged from the United States, showing a nursery rhyme taught to children which contains safety instructions in case of a school shooting.

Cohen wrote on Twitter that her daughter has already been doing lockdown drills in her pre-k classes.

Skipper said the sign is not a requirement in kindergarten classrooms throughout the district and was made independently.

The post, written on Wednesday, had been shared more than 8,000 times and retweeted nearly 20,000 times at the time of writing. The statement said schools have a responsibility to help students and staff prepare in case of an emergency.

The Somerville mother told The Boston Globe that she saw the "jarring" poster while touring a kindergarten in Somerville for her five-year-old daughter.

"Lockdown, Lockdown/It's all done/Now it's time to have some fun!".

A mother who visited her soon-to-be kindergartner's classroom in Somerville this week tweeted her shock over a sing-song nursery rhyme teaching kids how to respond in a lockdown - which city leaders are defending as a sober reminder of the reality in schools across the nation.

Speaking to The Boston Globe, Cohen said that while she was disturbed by the rhyme, she understood why it was there.

"These are the things they unfortunately have to do", she said. The government also set up a federal commission on school safety after a deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida, earlier this year, but is not looking at the role of guns in schools.

Since more than 20 school shootings have taken place in 2018 so far, educators are taking serious measures to teach students what to do in the event of an active shooter or other emergency on campus. "To see that absurdity and horror and have that sick feeling in your stomach is important". "Stay outraged... I think that that's important", she added.

Much like fire drills in past generations, lockdown drills are now common practice in schools and won't be going away anytime soon, according to the statement.

Officials went on to say that lockdowns are jarring and students know how unnatural the experience is, the Post said.
