US To Give North Korea New Timeline For Denuclearization

North Korea has opted not to hold an "anti-U.S. imperialism" rally marking the anniversary of the start of the Korean War, another sign of detente following the summit between leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has said he will not put a timeline on negotiations for North Korea's denuclearization, contradicting a senior defense official who said Washington would soon present a timeline to North Korea with "specific asks".

Kim Jong Un's decision to ditch the rally is the latest sign that tensions between the United States and North Korea are easing.

"If we can't do that, if it turns out that there is no capacity to deliver the outcome that both presidents said they wanted, yeah, we reassess", he said.

On Monday, Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said defense officials would only speak to military-related aspects of negotiations on North Korea and that there was "no specific timeline" for the diplomatic process.

Pompeo himself told reporters the day after the Singapore summit Washington hoped to achieve "major disarmament" by North Korea within Trump's current term, which ends on January 20, 2021.

"We'll know pretty soon if they're going to operate in good faith or not", the official told reporters travelling with James Mattis, the United States defence secretary, on a trip to Asia.

PM Lee had told reporters during a visit to the global media centre on June 10 that the summit was Singapore's contribution to an worldwide endeavour that was "in our profound interest".

North Korea's change in tone and messaging remains nuanced though.

President Trump gives briefing after summit with Kim Jong Un, says the past does not have to define the future, says North Korea agreed to destroy a "major" missile testing site and the US will stop war games. But he insisted that he found Kim "unequivocal" in his statements that he is prepared to denuclearize, a first for the North Korean regime.

"It is a cost we are willing to pay" to contribute to a meeting that is in Singapore's "profound interest", Lee said. "I heard it myself when I visited there as Central Intelligence Agency director, I heard it myself when I visited Pyongyang as Secretary of State and I heard it again where there was a group together with the President and Chairman Kim".
