Yahoo Messenger Gets A July 17 Execution Date

It will be open to the public when Yahoo Messenger shuts down.

Yahoo! has announced that on July 17, it will officially shut down its long-running Messenger client and service.

After 20 years, Yahoo Messenger is logging off for the last time.

Yahoo said the company will focus "on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs".

The end of Yahoo Messenger isn't surprising.

Oath said that those loyal fans (are there any left?) who are looking for an alternative can choose to use the invite-only group messaging app called Yahoo Squirrel, which is now in beta.

Oath didn't immediately respond to request for comment. After July 17, you'll no longer be able to access your chats and the service will no longer work.

While there is no official replacement for Messenger being announced, Yahoo! did say it is working on a beta chat product called Squirrel that is now running as an invite-only trial.

As the web has evolved, the messaging space has become dominated by quite a few apps, chief among them WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, all owned by Facebook.

However, Yahoo Messenger failed to make a mark in the user consciousness as platforms such as WhatsApp, iMessage, and Facebook Messenger continued to forge ahead in the mobile era, leaving behind desktop-first software such as the Yahoo app and Google Hangouts.

Yahoo Messenger was considered an industry pioneer in chat software, serving as a home for many internet users alongside the now-defunct AOL Instant Messenger. Verizon is pointing users to its new group messenger, Yahoo Squirrel.

So if you want to step back in time a bit, back to when the telegram was still around and the iPhone was still nearly a decade away, slide on over to Yahoo Messenger for the next month.

Yahoo Messenger also let users add custom avatars, away messengers and music tones for notifications.
