3 animals injured, 6 animals dead after jaguar escapes Audubon Zoo exhibit

A jaguar escaped from its habitat and killed six animals at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans on Saturday, causing the zoo to shut down for the day. Four alpaca, an emu and a fox in nearby enclosures were killed by the jaguar.

"The animal care team is devastated by this tragic loss", Audubon spokesman Frank Donze said in a news release. The zoo is going to remain closed through Saturday as officials continue their investigation, but it is expected to return to normal operating hours on Sunday, July 15, 2018. A press conference is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.

At 7:20 a.m., a staff member saw Valerio outside of his enclosure. "Immediately he followed procedures, secured himself inside a building and alerted the rest of the team".

Animal care, veterinary staff and security managed to track down the jaguar inside of the zoo and sedate him around 8:15 a.m.

There were no human injuries, the spokesman says.

Zoo officials said they will not put the jaguar down under any circumstance.

"In the history of Audubon, at least the last 50 years, we have not had any incident", said Ron Forman, head of the Audubon Nature Institute. The zoo is inspected by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and was reaccredited last April.
