Americans turn more anti-Russia under Trump

Hoyer thundered. "Surely we can rise above pandering to party and Putin to act on behalf of our freedom and our security".

42% of registered voters said they approved of Trump's performance in office in the latest opinion poll, compared with a daily average of between 40% and 44% so far in July.

While a 47 percent plurality of Democrat sand Democratic-leaning respondents think Russian Federation poses the greatest immediate threat to the United States, only 10 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaners said they think so. But he appeared to veer from his script to add: "It could be other people also - there's a lot of people out there", he said.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, said Republicans' refusal to spend more money on election security "represents nothing less than unilateral disarmament" against Russia, citing the USA intelligence community's finding that Russia intervened in the 2016 election and charges brought by the Justice Department against Russian officials for hacking Democratic groups. But only 32 percent of Republicans think that is true compared to 84 percent of Democrats.

Independents were in the middle: 24 percent said Russian Federation was the United States' greatest threat; 64 percent said they believed Russian Federation was unfriendly or an enemy.

It came as the House moved forward with a spending bill that eliminates new funding for election security grants to states, amid protests by Democrats who say Republicans are not doing enough to prevent Russian meddling in US elections.

40 percent of Democrats described Russian Federation as an imminent threat while only 14 percent of Republicans agreed. He was under fire again on Wednesday when he responded "no" to a question on whether Russian Federation still poses a threat to US elections. Only North Korea got a higher response on that question, 31 percent.

A Quinnipiac University poll last month found that the majority of Republicans supported the Trump administration's practice of separating families that illegally crossed the border.

A majority of Americans, 59 percent, said they aren't confident the government is doing enough to stop foreign countries from influencing future elections, while 37 percent say the federal government is doing enough. They seem to be particularly concerned since Russia's goal in interfering with the 2016 election was to elect Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton. Overall, 52 percent of registered voters agreed.

"The American people should be very anxious about the commitment of this president and his Republican allies in Congress to securing our elections", Rep. David N. Cicilline (D-R.I.) said on the House floor on Wednesday. Results have an error estimate of plus or minus 1.8 percentage points.
