Amir-Abollahian says Syrians will not allow Israel to control Syria

Amir-Abollahian says Syrians will not allow Israel to control Syria

It added that the air defenses hit one of the "attacking planes and forced the rest to leave" Syrian air space.

A military base in eastern Syria used by Iranian drone operators and air-defence systems has been hit by a series of missiles, in an attack Damascus blamed on Israel.

Israel has not acknowledged the incident, and says they do not respond to reports that emerged from foreign media.

Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told AFP that the missile bombardment killed an unspecified number of "Iranian and pro-regime fighters" at the T-4 base and was "likely to be Israeli".

Military sources suggest that Israel carried out the assault on the T-4 airbase.

In April, Israel acknowledged targeting a shipment of advanced air defense weapons, including a missile with a 110 kilometer range, at the base.

Damascus, as well as its allies Iran and Russian Federation, said Israel was responsible for an April 9 air strike on the same Homs base, an attack that killed seven Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) members.

Iran immediately vowed revenge and Israel launched "Operation Chess" in an effort to thwart Iranian retaliation with a series of strikes on Iranian targets in Syria. Israel's air force has struck scores of targets it described as Iranian deployments or arms transfers to Iran-backed Hezbollah.

Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu said last month that Israel would "not tolerate the Iranian military entrenchment in Syria".

Israel usually does not claim the strikes, but has long said it will not allow Iran to establish a military presence in Syria.

Iranian forces along with thousands of troops belonging to Shiite proxy militias and Hezbollah have been taking part in a Syrian regime offensive in southwestern Syria, retaking strategic territory, including the Syrian Golan Heights, held by rebel groups for the past four years.
