Ant-Man And The Wasp US box office down on expectations

This now marks the last in the triumvirate of films that Marvel had slated for 2018, capping off what's been the biggest year for the studio to date.

Ant-Man & the Wasp has scored a major win at the box office in its opening weekend debut! Currently, Ant-Man And The Wasp has only opened in 48% of the worldwide markets, so we can expect its global box office to grow substantially in the coming weeks.

The Ant-Man and the Wasp opening weekend estimate of $76 million marked a roughly 25% increase over the Ant-Man debut, which is just slightly better than the 24% increase that 2010's Iron Man 2 ($128.1 million) posted over its predecessor, 2008's Iron Man ($98.6 million), and the 24% uptick that 2013's Thor: The Dark World ($85.7 million) posted over its predecessor, 2011's Thor ($65.7 million).

Disney and Pixar's Incredibles 2 held tight to the 2nd spot, bringing in over $29 million, which brings the totals to $500 million domestically and $700 million worldwide. (August 3), Italy (August 14), Portugal (August 15) and Japan (August 31), with the Chinese date still yet to be determined.

Looking ahead, should Ant-Man deliver on the average 2.75x multiplier for a film in the MCU we're looking at a domestic performance around $209 million or so while a performance on the lower end would be closer to $180 million.

Following a blockbuster Thursday night preview, the box office for Ant-Man and Wasp has slowed down a bit, but not with bad numbers by any means, as the movie still outperformed the first by 33%. The latest MCU production also continued the trend in topping the box office during its opening weekend, a feat that every movie in the MCU has accomplished.

Elsewhere, Sony's Sicario: Day of the Soldado picked up another $7.3 million, taking the domestic tally to $35 million and rounding out the top 5. Similar to Solo, Infinity War brought in just under $1 million, bringing its domestic box office total to $675 million. The horror prequel was only able to rake in $17 million.

The flick opened Thursday with $11.5 million - almost double that of the first movie - but its Friday, Saturday and Sunday numbers didn't hold as high, which basically means a lot of the hard core fans went to see it Thursday night. Upcoming key markets include a July 20 release in Mexico, August 2 release in Russian Federation and a late, December 6 release in Brazil.

Internationally, The First Purge debuted in 26 markets with an estimated $10.9 million.

Meanwhile, "Ocean's 8" stole another $7.7 million in 61 worldwide markets this weekend, for a global tally of $236.9 million.
