Beryl becomes season's first hurricane, but it may not last long

Beryl could strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane this weekend with winds of up to 100 miles per hour before entering the eastern Caribbean on Sunday afternoon, according to the National Hurricane Center. Wind speeds are reported at 65 miles per hour, which have slowed down since Friday night, and is moving west to northwest at 14 miles per hour.

Maximum sustained winds are now 30 miles per hour.

Beryl is considered a small storm, with hurricane force winds extending out about 10 miles (20 kilometres) from its centre. With Alberto forming before June 1st, the official start of the hurricane season, this is the fourth consecutive year in which a preseason storm forms. How these factors come into balance will be crucial in determining how strong Beryl is when it moves through the Lesser Antilles Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. It made landfall on the Florida Panhandle as a subtropical storm and ushered drenching rains across states in the South and Midwest.

Hurricane Beryl is expected to produce 2 to 4 inches of rain through Sunday across the southern Leeward Islands and northern Windward Islands. Beryl is expected to gradually weaken over the Caribbean early next week and may no longer be an organized tropical cyclone once it reaches Hispaniola.

The first Atlantic hurricane of the season is tiny but a bit of a puzzle.

"Although the system is forecast to interact with a frontal zone next week, it could linger off the southeast coast and some additional development is possible", Bridges said.

Updates on the storm's progression can be found online and NWS is advising residents in the Coastal Carolinas to monitor the storm.

As Beryl continues to show signs of strengthening, the BVI should begin feeling the effects of the hurricane by late Sunday.

"A west-northwestward motion with some increase in forward speed is expected during the next few days", the Barbados Met Office said in its 5 a.m. bulletin.

Although there's no guarantee it will turn into a tropical storm, and the system is not expected to make landfall, it could continue circling a few hundred miles off the coast of North Carolina and SC for a few days, according to hurricane experts at AccuWeather.
