British Airways warns of 'knock-on disruption' after 'chaos' at Heathrow

About 30 minutes later, Heathrow confirmed that the airport was fully open and operations were resuming as normal.

A number of flights at the airport were earlier disrupted after a control tower was evacuated because of a fire alarm.

Some passengers said they had been delayed by nearly 15 hours.

Although flights are operating today, BA says some "knock on disruption" can be expected. It's not terribly helpful...

Councillor Ray Puddifoot, leader of Hillingdon Council, said: "We have given the government numerous opportunities to address our concerns and answer our questions and they have demonstrably failed to do so". Passengers on late evening flights were told to check with the airline before leaving for the airport. They can't re-book the flights because they've got no computer system.

The airline blamed a "combination" of problems - including a systems issue and the temporary closure of Heathrow's air traffic control tower.

The alert affected BA services at Terminal 5.

Mr Khan said: "Heathrow expansion will result in hundreds of thousands of people being blighted by intolerable noise levels and worsening air quality in an area where pollution is already well above legal levels".

"We are doing all we can to keep disruption to our services to a minimum, and are sorry for the disruption to our customers' travel plans".

The disruption comes as airports across the country gear up for the busiest part of the year as the summer holiday season begins in earnest.
