Carmelo Anthony Granted Permission To Meet With Rockets, Heat

He just signed a brand new four-year contract with the Rockets, and now, according to Jordan Schultz of Yahoo Sports, he wants to add another star to the roster - his good friend, veteran forward Carmelo Anthony - to help push Houston over the hump that they just missed this time.

A league source confirmed the meeting. Between him and Trevor Ariza, the Rockets have lost two small forwards and two of their best defenders to free agency.

But the Heat has become a consideration because Anthony is said to like South Florida and the Heat organization and because of his friendship with Heat guard Dwyane Wade, who remains an unsigned free agent. ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported Paul and head coach Mike D'Antoni talked with Anthony's camp over the weekend. A team source confirmed that the Heat is intrigued, believing he can still help a Heat offense that tied for 23rd in the National Basketball Association in scoring at 103.4 points per game.

Melo recently opted in to his contract with Oklahoma City to garner $27.9 million next season.

If he chooses to sign with Houston, the Rockets can offer him their mid-level exception, which amounts to $5.3 million. The Lakers also have been mentioned as a possibility but reportedly have not met with Anthony. Anthony is now in the twilight of his career, barely shooting 40 percent from the field with the Thunder previous year and averaging a career low in points while putting in his usual effort, or lack thereof, on defense.

The 10-time All-Star shot 35.7 per cent on three-pointers past year, failing to increase his efficiency from the previous season, 34.7 per cent, despite playing alongside Paul George and Russell Westbrook. Ariza joined the Phoenix Suns on a one-year, $15 million deal earlier this month, more than double the salary he made last season.

Worryingly, his presence on the court saw the Thunder's team plus/minus rating slide to negative 14.3 during the playoffs.
