Carter Page subject of Russian Federation recruitment effort: Federal Bureau of Investigation documents

The Department of Justice has released documents relating to a FISA warrant against Carter Page, a former campaign adviser to then-candidate Donald Trump.

In more than 400 pages made public Saturday as a result of a Freedom of Information request by media outlets, and first reported by the New York Times, the government laid out its case for secretly monitoring Page in a series of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act - or FISA - warrants, each of which was approved by the FISA court.

Material in a FISA warrant is considered highly classified, and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court proceedings are also conducted in secret.

Although the 412-page document is heavily redacted but details concerns the Federal Bureau of Investigation had about Mr. Page, who has denied being a Russian spy.

"The FBI believes Page has been the subject of targeted recruitment by the Russian government.to undermine and influence the outcome of the 2016 USA presidential election in violation of US criminal law", the documents say.

On three separate occasions, officials from the Department of Justice - including Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein - renewed the FISA application. But they included damning passages concerning Page, who served for a time as a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign.

After a redaction, the the application to wiretap Page included a partial sentence: '. undermine and influence the outcome of the 2016 US presidential election in violation of USA criminal law'. The release of the document comes in the wake of a lengthy partisan disagreement in congress over allegations that the Federal Bureau of Investigation abused its powers when seeking to secretly monitor someone who was once associated with the Trump campaign - though the campaign later distanced itself from Page. The warrant was the subject of the much-hyped Republican memo released by House Intelligence Committee Republicans back in February, claiming that a group of politically-biased Federal Bureau of Investigation employees abused the FISA warrant process.

Nunes stated that a Yahoo News article in which Christopher Steele was the source, was used to corroborate the Steele dossier. "The GOP must cease their attacks on our law enforcement and intelligence communities, and finally decide where their loyalty lies".

Representative Adam Schiff, the California Democrat who is the ranking member of the House intelligence committee, said the documents underscore the "legitimate concern" the Federal Bureau of Investigation had about Page's activities. He blamed Trump for making public House Republicans' initial memo about the FISA applications, a move by Trump that the congressman called "nakedly political and self-interested, and created to to (sic) interfere with the Special Counsel's investigation".
