CDC recalls Del Monte vegetable trays

Seven of those people have been hospitalized. But the number of infections has grown since then, and the CDC is warning that more cases could still be reported, because the cyclosporiasis infection has a delayed onset for symptoms of roughly one week and can last for weeks. A week earlier the CDC's count was 185 cases.

A previous major cyclosporiasis outbreak was reported in 2015, when 546 individuals were infected across 31 states.

Del Monte-branded fresh vegetables have been linked to a parasite that has sickened more than 200 people in the Midwest. The recall affected three different sizes of vegetable trays containing broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, celery and dill dip.

This week's CDC update showed slightly stronger wording. The cases were reported in Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin and IL.

There have been illnesses reported in Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, and Minnesota.

On June 8, Del Monte recalled 6-ounce and 12-ounce vegetable trays from retail locations. Still, no matter where you live, if you have their veggies in your fridge with a sell by date of June 17, do yourself a favor and compost it ASAP. However, anyone who purchased these trays before the recall should immediately throw them away and clean and disinfect anything they came into contact with.

The CDC is recalling a Del Monte vegetable tray sold at Kwik Trip and Kwik Star locations after there have been 212 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in people from Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and MI. "FDA is now reviewing distribution and supplier information related to the vegetable trays; the investigation is ongoing", according to the FDA's update this week.

The time between becoming infected and becoming sick is usually about 1 week.

According to the CDC, symptoms of cyclospora include diarrhea, with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements. The parasites can also cause nausea, fatigue, and several other flu-like symptoms lasting for at least a month if not treated by doctors.
