Dejan Lovren Says He's One Of The Best Defenders In The World

A Croatia global, who featured in the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League final in May, believes his performances over the past few months prove that he is "one of the best defenders in the world".

Coming just seven weeks after Liverpool's defeat by Real Madrid in Kiev, Lovren has used it to hit back at his critics.

Lovren's Croatia team defeated England in Wednesday's World Cup semi-final to take their place in the Moscow showpiece against France.

Like with my case, I think people should respect me also.

"It's something special for me", Lovren told beIN Sports."From my point of view, people were saying I had a hard season but I don't agree with that".

And he is delighted that this current Croatian generation have finally lived up to, and now surpassed, the standards of the 1998 team which reached the semi-finals.

Lovren said: "This is something we will never forget".

"People are crying, they are happy in our country - this is something historical for us", Lovren said. We will never forget this.

"After 20 years, people will remember us, not only the '98 team".

"[In Croatia] we went through a lot of s***, war, all these things and even now the situation is not the best".

"It was tough first half". They had also good chances, but second half we did it much, much better. And it Is a special history when you look back and see that three times in the knock out stages we have played 120 minutes and yet we still had fresher legs than that England team.

He added that Croatia captain Luka Modric was "one of the best midfield players in the world", and deserved to win the Ballon d'Or should Croatia win the World Cup.

"England are one of the favourites to win the World Cup and you have to respect that", he said.
