Donald Trump Publishes Letter from North Korea’s Kim Jong

"President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un conducted a comprehensive, in-depth, and honest exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new U.S. -DPRK relations and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula", the leaders said in a joint statement.

The letter, sent on July 6, was unveiled exactly a month after Trump and Kim's historic summit in Singapore.

In it, Kim describes his landmark June 12 summit with Trump in Singapore as the "start of a meaningful journey" and expresses confidence that the "sincere efforts" of both sides "will surely come to fruition".

Kim used the abbreviation for North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The Pentagon says Pyongyang has indicated several times they have as many as 200 sets of remains that could be those of United States soldiers who died in the war.

Last month, Trump said North Korea had agreed to give back the remains of thousands of soldiers, and that the transfer had already begun, a claim Pompeo later corrected before a U.S. Senate committee.

The U.S. says North Korea has continued to smuggle refined petroleum products into the country in excess of the quota of 500,000 barrels per year allowed under United Nations sanctions imposed because of nuclear and missile programs.

"We were ready", the official said.

But skepticism remains over whether North Korea's findings will satisfy Japan.

There was no call or explanation from North Korean officials on why they skipped the meeting.

One observer pointed out that Trump would have likely criticized his response to North Korea had it been the reaction of another president.

But while improving relations and decreasing hostility has certainly been a benefit of Trump's diplomatic push on North Korea, it's been a means to the end of denuclearization.

Some remains have been returned to the US over the years, but very few since recovery efforts were mostly halted in 2005 as U.S. As part of their agreement, Kim pledged to abandon the nuclear weapons his country developed to deter a potential invasion, while Trump has said he would guarantee Kim's security, ultimately lift sanctions and potentially establish an official peace in a decades-long conflict on the Korean Peninsula.

The Department of Defense estimates that North Korea is holding about 200 sets of remains from some 5,300 American military personnel believed missing in the country.
