Emmy Award nominations: 'Handmaid's Tale' earns 20 nods

The news was not so good for Nicole Kidman at Thursday's Emmy nomination ceremony in Los Angeles.

Another streamed series, Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale", earned 20 nominations and a chance to defend its title as best drama series at the 70th Primetime Emmy ceremony airing September 17 on NBC. And during Thursday's 2018 Emmy nominations announcement, it was revealed that it's been nominated for 22 more, including Best Drama Series, Best Directing for a Drama Series and Best Writing for a Drama Series.

Since the first season of Game of Thrones, Dinklage has received a nomination for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series every year the show was eligible, and this year is no different. It was also the first time Apple Inc. was nominated, for its CBS collaboration "Carpool Karaoke". That's up from a quarter of the field past year, when Brown ("This Is Us") and Glover ("Atlanta") won top acting awards.

NBC - anchored by "Saturday Night Live" and "This is Us" - ranked third overall, garnering 78 Emmy bids, followed by the FX network, with 50.

Comedy series: Atlanta; Barry; Black-ish; Curb Your Enthusiasm; GLOW; The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel; Silicon Valley; and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

"I feel tremendous gratitude and joy with this nomination" and am "thrilled" for the show's cast and crew, Oh said in a statement.

Several major stars not normally associated with television got their first Emmy nominations in 2018. She added a postscript: "I think my mother at this moment may actually be satisfied".

"Saturday Night Live", riding high with its relentless pillorying of the Trump administration, was rewarded with 21 nods. If he wins, he will earn the coveted EGOT, having previously won a Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.

Hulu's "The Handmaid's Tale" scored 20 nominations - seven better than a year ago - and is an early favorite to repeat as the victor for best drama in September.

Top of the Lake: China Girl, shot in Sydney, also missed out in other categories, including best limited TV series, while lead actress Elisabeth Moss failed to earn a nomination.
