Fans Have Their Fangs Out Over the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot

Another beloved 1990s property has jumped on the reboot train: Buffy the Vampire Slayer will be getting a fresh adaptation.

"A Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot has always been rumored, with 20th Century Fox TV Chairman Gary Newman remarking earlier this year "(Buffy) is probably our most ripe show for a remake, it's something we talk about frequently". The reboot will be taking a different approach this time around in having a black actress portray the titular character, according to the new report.

THR also notes that the studio will be pitching this new Buffy to streaming and cable networks this summer, and a bidding war seems likely. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the reboot "will be contemporary and build on the mythology of the original".

Original series creator Joss Whedon is onboard to executive produce, with writer Monica Owusu-Breen attached to write the script. "Like today's world, the new Buffy will be richly diverse, with some aspects of the series, like the flagship, seen as metaphors for issues facing society today".

Whedon appeared reluctant previous year to resurrect the series. Gail Berman, Fran Kazui, Kaz Kazui, Joe Earley will also serve as executive producers on the TV series. So, that should be great news for fans of the original series. Talks reportedly started back in the fall, and the decision to move forward was made when Owusu-Breen was hired as the writer. Many were thrilled, while others are convinced no one should mess with perfection.

The show was inspired by Whedon's feature film of the same name, ran for seven seasons, inspiring a spin-off series Angel, a larger expanded universe of comics and novels. Its cast includes Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, Anthony Stewart Head, David Boreanaz, Kristine Sutherland, Seth Green, James Marsters, Marc Blucas, Emma Caulfield, Michelle Trachtenberg, Amber Benson, and Tom Lenk.
