Formula One: Hamilton wins in Hungary to build championship lead

Vettel only got past the other Mercedes with a handful of laps left, by which point Hamilton was comfortably clear - his final margin of victory was 17 seconds. "I'm really happy, going into the break, particularly with back-to-back wins".

Hamilton won from pole at the Hungaroring having enjoyed a dominant race on a circuit where Mercedes did not have the pace of the Ferrari.

Speaking after his win in Hungary, Hamilton said: "We've definitely had ups and downs in this Championship". We are over half way of the year.

Bottas' race unravelled after Vettel attempted to pass.

It was his fifth win of the year, compared to Vettel's four, but he warned that the German's Ferrari team had taken a decisive step forward in performance in the last couple of races and now clearly had the fastest auto.

'Absolutely not, and it is far too early to think about that when you consider the ups and downs we have had this year, ' Hamilton said when asked if he was closing in on the title.

Had Ferrari locked out the front row as looked likely then we would have expected them to maintain their lead at the start and control the race from the front - barring disasters.

Raikkonen, without water during the race after Ferrari forgot to connect the bottle, made two stops and agreed third - his fifth successive podium finish - was the best he could have hoped for in the circumstances.

"I don't know how much length the tyre was on but I guess it was around 50 - 54 [laps] - the tyre was completely shot", Wolff added.

"We caught up with Bottas after the first stop but there was no chance to overtake. That's a little bit unfortunate because that's a long, long way to go on the softs, it's not nice to have them on that long".

Then I think we did well. But what can you do?

Team boss Wolff said: "It wasn't realistic for us to win".

He said the first 12 races of the season had been "epic".

"I have not called a meeting with the bosses for Toto saying I was the flawless wing man in this race", read the statement.

Kevin Magnussen was a lapped seventh for Haas, lifting the US-owned team to fifth and ahead of Force India, with double world champion Fernando Alonso eighth for McLaren on his 37th birthday.
