French convict escapes from prison using a helicopter

It's not the first time that Faid, 46, has gone on the lam.

A French criminal serving 25 years for a cash-transport van robbery has made a spectacular escape from his prison in the Paris region with the help of three armed accomplices who used a helicopter to fly him out of the jail. Reports suggest the pilot has been released and is safe - if shocked.

The Ministry of the Interior said a huge police response has been ordered in an attempt to catch the fugitive, who has been described as risky. Gangster who loves Hollywood crime Born in 1972, Faid grew up in a notoriously rough part of Paris.

Faid was once France's most-wanted man and previously said his life of crime was inspired by films such as "Scarface", according to AFP. He is said to be devoted to Robert De Niro movies and the stylised crime thrillers of U.S. director Michael Mann.

French robber Redoine Faid broke free from a jail south of Paris using a helicopter on Sunday, sparking a massive manhunt around the French capital. In 2001, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for armed robbery.

In that escape, he took four prison wardens hostage and blasted a number of doors with explosives before fleeing in two getaway cars.

Still, he was the suspected mastermind of the attempted armed robbery in 2010 that led to a high-speed chase and a shootout with police that killed 26-year-old Aurelie Fouquet.

Faid, a notorious career thief, once managed to talk his way out of a 10-year sentence by convincing parole officials he was a changed man who regretted his past actions. Unarmed guards said they could do nothing to prevent it.

Faid wrote in a 2010 autobiography that while in Israel he disguised himself as an ultra-Orthodox Jew and learned Hebrew to escape police.

Three armed accomplices were involved in the escape and hacked through a lock that gave them access to a hallway where Fair was waiting with his brothers, Agence France-Presse reported, citing sources close to the case. Two years later, inmates accused of running an global drugs ring escaped a remand centre near Aix-en-Provence by similar means.
