Now comes word of a partnership led by Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Twitter - specifically, a project announced today around data portability that should make it easier for you to pull out your data and transfer it between apps, essentially making it a heck of a lot easier for you to switch services instead of feeling like you're locked in by virtue of it being too cumbersome to get your data out.

At the moment, it is unlikely if a Facebook user will decide to leave the platform for another social networking company taking their data with them since there is barely any competition. Interested parties will need the API keys from the online services they want to port data between in order to use DTP.

A handful of tech giants are participating in the Data Transfer Project. For example, you might use Instagram app where you share photos publicly, Facebook app where you share updates with friends, and Fitbit fitness app for tracking your workouts. "Just imagine being able to transfer your biometric data or location history from a service like Google Maps to Foursquare, or your Microsoft Account".

"So far, we have developed adapters for seven different service providers across five different types of consumer data; we think this demonstrates the viability of this approach to scale to a large number of use cases". Now, they're hoping even more companies join the open source Data Transfer Project announced today.

The Data Transfer Project was formed in 2017 to create an open-source, service-to-service data portability platform so that all individuals across the web could easily move their data between online service providers whenever they want.
