Indian court upholds death sentences for 2012 Delhi gangrape

In May last year, India's highest court upheld the 2013 death penalty verdicts for four of the six assailants who gang-raped and tortured a 23-year-old college student in New Delhi in December 2012, saying they did not deserve leniency due to "brutal, barbaric and diabolical" conduct.

In May 2017, the Supreme Court had upheld the Delhi High Court's judgement that awarded death sentence to Akshay, Pawan, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh life - convicts in Nirbhaya case that sent shock waves across the country.

On May 5 a year ago, the top court had upheld the death penalty to the four convicts - Mukesh (29), Pawan (22), Vinay Sharma (23) and Akshay Kumar Singh (31), saying the "brutal, barbaric and diabolic nature" of the crime could create a "tsunami of shock" to destroy a civilised society.

On 5 May, 2017 a full bench comprising chief justice of India Dipak Misra along with justices R. Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan upheld the death penalty amid spontaneous applause.

A fourth accused did not apply for a review petition, while the fifth accused, Ram Singh, committed suicide. The only other legal option for the four is through a mercy petition to the President of India.

The woman was brutally raped and beaten up by six men in the moving bus and thrown out of it near Mahipalpur along with her male friend.

In the years since, women's advocates say that the Nirbhaya case raised awareness, prompting more women to come forward if they're abused or assaulted, with authorities responding to the concerns with more closed-circuit security cameras and fast track courts for crimes against women.

Over the next few days, his brother Mukesh Singh, gym instructor Vinay Sharma, fruit seller Pawan Gupta, a helper on the bus Akshay Thakur, and the 17-year-old juvenile, who can not be named, are arrested.

December 26: She is flown to Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital for advanced treatment.

The court had earlier reserved its verdict on a review petition filed by Mukesh. However, the Centre amended the rape law to introduce the death penalty as the maximum punishment in gang rape cases. Since the sixth accused claimed to be 17-and-a-half years old, proceedings against him will be conducted by the juvenile justice board. He walks out of a correction home after spending three years.
