Iran's president warns Trump about the 'mother of all wars'

Trump earlier this year pulled the United States out of the worldwide deal meant to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon and ordered increased American sanctions.

Addressing a gathering of Iranian diplomats, Rohani said: "Mr Trump, don't play with the lion's tail, this would only lead to regret", ISNA reported.

"You are not in a position to incite the Iranian nation against Iran's security and interests", Rouhani said, in an apparent reference to reported efforts by Washington to destabilize Iran's Islamic government.

In Washington, US officials familiar with the matter told the Reuters news agency that the Trump administration has launched an offensive of speeches and online communications meant to foment unrest and help pressure Iran to end its nuclear programme and its support of armed groups.

"Anyone who understands the rudiments of politics doesn't say "we will stop Iran's oil exports"...we have been the guarantor of the regional waterway's security throughout history", Rouhani said.

Under the JCPOA, Iran undertook to put limits on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions imposed against Tehran.

"Whenever Europe has sought an agreement with us, the White House has sown discord", Rouhani said. "Are they prepared to accept this?"

He claimed it would be an "obvious mistake" to negotiate with the United States as Washington was unreliable.

Ali Larijani made the remarks in a meeting with Andreas Schieder, the managing parliamentary leader of the Social Democratic Party in Austria's National Council, in Tehran on Sunday.

Khamenei added: 'The word and even the signature of the Americans can not be relied upon, so negotiations with America are of no avail.

Speaking in an address on state television in Iran, Rouhani said Iranians must stand together to withstand any and all pressure from the United States, according to Reuters.

But, he added, "we have of course adopted some measures in order to prepare the ground for eventually increasing the level of enrichment if it is needed and if the negotiations with the Europeans fail".

On Wednesday, the chief of Iran's nuclear agency Ali Akbar Salehi said that his country's effort to acquire uranium has resulted in a stockpile of as much as 950 tons.
