Jones Wins First NASCAR Race

The Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona International Speedway ended with two big wrecks on Saturday night knocking out several veteran drivers and Brad Keselowski was sure to get his point across that he wasn't happy with how the pileups happened after the race.

"Definitely happy to see those guys get their first win, " said Truex, who had Jones as a teammate at Furniture Row Racing a year ago.

The final circuit was the only one Jones led.

"How about that race boys and girls?" said Jones, who replaced 2004 series champion Matt Kenseth at Joe Gibbs Racing this year. Jones shouted to the fans in the grandstands after his celebratory burnout in front of the flag stand.

Aric Almirola, left, loses a tire as he goes by Michael McDowell after they were involved in a crash during NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, July 7, 2018, in Daytona Beach, Fla.

"Everybody blocks as much as that, so I don't see any difference in it".

The first overtime restart saw a crash right before the start-finish line the involved Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Bubba Wallace, Johnson, Trevor Bayne, Ricky Stenhouse Jr, Ross Chastain, Brendan Gaughan and Ryan Newman. The caution enabled Jimmie Johnson to return to the lead lap.

AJ Allmendinger finished third, followed by Kasey Kahne, Chris Buescher and Ty Dillon.

Last year's race victor, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., had the most memorable run. Truex blamed himself for failing to see Jones' run coming in his rear-view mirror.

"It was okay, I think - you never know what you're going to get here", said Truex.

Two massive wrecks in Stage 2, both involving Ricky Stenhouse Jr., eliminated the majority of the contending cars and opened the door for a new victor.

But Keselowski didn't blame Stenhouse. Byron and Busch were running 1-2 at the time.

"Ricky was doing the best he could to give me a good push and had a great run to take the lead, and the vehicle in front of me (Byron) just threw a late, bad block", Keselowski said. "He just told me some pretty cool things, so it was cool hanging out with him because I've always been a great fan of him".

"The 2 got wrecked and so did everyone else", Hamlin said.

"I should have wrecked him and sent a message to the whole field".

Byron didn't stay up front for long.

Byron lost a good chance to improve on his 21st position in the standings. He just hit from behind me.

"I didn't give him anything", Truex Jr. said of Jones. "But at least we led some laps (12), so that was good". This was the final restrictor-plate race prior to the playoffs, which begin in September. He finished 17th, one lap down.
