Korean-Kazakh Figure Skater Dies in Stabbing

Ten, who became the first Kazakh figure skater to win an Olympic medal when he secured bronze at Sochi 2014, was stabbed as two men attempted to steal his auto mirrors, according to news agency Kazinform.

According to reports, Ten was stabbed in downtown Almaty by two men who were trying to steal mirrors from his auto.

He finished 27th at those Games, after having only been able to train at low intensity in the run-up.

Olympic figure skating medallist Denis Ten was killed Thursday, and prosecutors in Kazakhstan said they were treating the case as murder. He was also a two-time World Figure Skating Championships medalist.

Kazakhstan's health ministry says Ten suffered heavy bleeding and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Ten competed in three Olympic Games: Vancouver in 2010, Sochi in 2014 and Pyeongchang in 2018.

The popular Japanese anime series Yuri on Ice has a character based on Ten.

"The OCA would like to send its most honest condolences to the family of Denis Ten, to the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan and to figure skating fans all over the world". As the 2014 Olympic bronze medalist in Sochi, he was the first Kazakhstani figure skater to make the podium at the Olympics.

Kazakhstan's Sports and Culture Minister Arystanbek Mukhamediuly called Ten's death an "irreparable loss" for the country.

The International Skating Union confirmed the sad news, tweeting, "Our heartfelt condolences go out to Denis' family, friends and fans across the world".

The worldwide figure skating community has mourned the loss of a talented and resilient athlete.

"He was an inspiration for many people", said American skater Adam Rippon. "Throughout his sporting career, Denis set an example with his motivation, strength of spirit and his champion's personality".
