President Trump Speaks out on Alleged Cohen Recording - Timothy Meads

"Inconceivable that the government would break into a lawyers office (early in the morning) - nearly unheard of", Mr Trump tweeted, in a possible reference to an Federal Bureau of Investigation raid on the office of his former lawyer Michael Cohen in April.

"First, a lawyer taping a client is not illegal", said the source, adding that NY law only requires one party to consent for a recording.

In Trump's first direct reaction to a report broken by the New York Times a day earlier, he added in a Twitter post: "The good news is that your favourite President did nothing wrong!"

The President's attorneys clearly believe that the tape will not show any wrongdoing by their client.

The recording cuts off with Trump mid-sentence, one person said, and picks up in the middle of a conversation Cohen is having with another person.

Despite the President's comment Saturday, he has waived privilege on the recording, said two sources briefed on legal discussions surrounding the materials seized in April.

Trump's current legal representative, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, confirmed the existence of the tapes on Friday.

Giuliani said no campaign funding was involved in the discussion between Trump and Cohen, who has distanced himself from Trump in recent months as the FBI investigates Cohen's business dealings.

In the 90-second conversation, Cohen can be heard urging Trump to consider buying the rights to McDougal's claims to better "control" the story, according to people familiar with the exchange.

Trump complained on Saturday via Twitter that an attorney recording a client conversation is "inconceivable," but NY law requires only one party to consent to any recordings of a conversation. Trump himself also has a history of recording phone calls and conversations.

Unfortunately for Trump, neither NY nor Washington DC require all-party consent for recording.

"The transaction that Michael is talking about on the tape never took place, but what's important is: If it did take place, the president said it has to be done correctly and it has to be done by check" to keep a proper record of it, Giuliani said.

Ms McDougal, 47, sold her story to the National Enquirer just before the election for $150,000, (pounds 114,000). "We have no knowledge of any of this", Hope Hicks, the campaign spokeswoman, said at the time, adding that McDougal's claim of an affair was "totally untrue".

Prosecutors are apparently interested in payments he made on Trump's behalf to porn actress Stormy Daniels, and other business dealings related to Trump.

"Nothing in that conversation suggests that he had any knowledge of it in advance", Giuliani told the newspaper of American Media Inc.'s payment.

"In the big scheme of things, it's powerful exculpatory evidence", he said.
